Both chambers are fully indirectly elected; despite parties forming since 2020, the 2021–2022 elections kept a clan-based apportionment of seats to Somalia's federal member states rather than party-list representation.

2022 presidential election

The president is indirectly elected by the Federal Parliament by a two-thirds majority, in up to two rounds, for a single four-year term. In the most recent election (15 May 2022), Hassan Sheikh Mohamud won in a third round of voting:
